Li Wenhai

Li Wenhai, male, Han nationality, was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province on 28 February 1932. He studied at the class of historical studies of Renmin University of China in 1952 and graduated in July 1955. Then he taught at Renmin University as teaching assistant, lecturer and deputy director of teaching and research section. From March 1971 to August 1979, he was transferred to the Department of Publicity in Beijing Municipal Government and took the posts of deputy chief and chief of Theory Section as well as deputy minister of Publicity Department. In August 1979, he came back to the Renmin University of China and became associate professor in December 1980, became professor in June 1986. During this period of time, he also took the posts of deputy director of the Institute of Qing History, vice dean and then dean of the Department of History. In August 1985, he was appointed as the vice president of Renmin University of China; in July 1987, he was appointed as the secretary of the Party Committee. He was appointed as the president of the university in June 1994 and left the post in August 2000. He is now a professor of the Institute of Qing History and tutors PhD program. His other part-time posts include: director of China Society of History, director of Deng Xiaoping Theory Research Center of the State Ministry of Education, head of the evaluation team for history section of State Social Science Foundation, director of History Teaching Guidance Committee of the State Ministry of Education, vice director of China Yan’an Spirit Research Institute.
He has been engaged in the teaching and research of Chinese history in modern and contemporary times for a long period of time and his main publications include:
